Sugarplum Surprises by Elisabeth Fairchild

Sugarplum Surprises by Elisabeth Fairchild

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

There's something about Fairchild's poetic style of writing that always draws me in. She does it once again with 'Sugarplum Surprises' which held a few nice surprises with it's Christmas Cinderella theme. The two leads a duke and a dressmaker are running from past and present hurts. Slowly uncovering and healing each other scars and finding love around Christmas just made this book just so sweet.

When Jane Nichol ran away from home she found her niche as a disguise dressmaker - Madame Nicolette. With the recent called off wedding of Edward Bridges, the Duke of Chandrose. Jane is left with a whole wardrobe of clothing and not a cent to her name. She appears as herself in front of the duke and asks for his help in this matter. Thinking the matter would rest there, Jane is surprised when the duke is able to see behind her disguise and what to undercover her past.
Jane was a calm and cool heroine.…

Portrait of a Scandal by Annie Burrows

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Once in awhile I enjoyed some plain brain candy. 'Portrait of a Scandal" was pretty much candy from start to finish. Predicable enough it was the reunited sweethearts theme that drew me to this book to begin with.
Once madly in love with the other, Lord Nathan Harcourt broke it off when a rumor reaches his ears that Amethyst Dalby is not all she appears to be. From that sudden drop, Amethyst pain and hurt becomes full blown man-hate which was nurtured by her wealthy aunt who passed everything to her upon her death. Amethyst on a trip to Paris is surprised to run into Nathan who is making ends meet with his art. When they meet again old feelings rise and perhaps it's time to put old ghosts to rest..until truth and love catch up to the couple.

I enjoyed the development of each character as they both turned out okay. Enough draw to keep me reading anyhow. Amethyst was a complete shrew at times, her hate o…

Cold Case, Hot Accomplice by Carla Cassidy

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

There's certain givens when it come to certain genres of romances. When it comes to romantic suspense I kinda assume suspense and romance would splice together to form a story. Cold Case, Hot Accomplice stars off like this but loses me in the end.

Secrets of a Gentleman Escort by Bronwyn Scott

Secrets of a Gentleman Escort by Bronwyn Scott

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have a few weaknesses for somethings in life. Gummy Bears(only sweets I tend to eat),Books(of course), Art Supplies(hours spent in hobby lobby alone), Secrets of a Gentleman Escort by Bronwyn Scott hit on another weakness of mine- sensual books.
There's something very captivating when an author seduces the reader with mean words. She does a wonderful job creating the perfect escort in Nicholas D'Arcy. Charming and delicious, this boy gets into some trouble with a angry husband and he's forced to flee the countryside. Where he meets Annorah Price-Ellis wanting to break free from the cage she's been placed. Annorah may have been caged by it's not only she who is free, but is able to free Nick from the ghosts from his past.

Nick and Annorah were such an wonderful couple. They matched wits and minds. They found something in the other that gave them strength and courage. Nick had his own…

A Darkness Strange and Lovely by Susan Dennard

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

When it comes to personal reader's hype it's hard to deal with alot of emotions from jubilation to disappointment. A Darkness Strange and Lovely by Susan Dennard made me run through alot of emotions. Not all good and not all bad.
The writing of course of superb that I quickly zoomed through this book. Sadly, this felt like a meal that left me hungry.
Picking up months later, Eleanor has to run when Marcus the necromancer one of the foes whose started the chaos from before, starts to hunt her. Along the way to meet up with the Spirit Hunters in Pairs, she meets a demon that was attached to her brother- but Oliver is hiding something but she's forced to trust him when he helps her save.
Now in Paris things aren't looking up and chaos is just steps away from destroying the city.

I had high hopes for this book and while it showed Eleanor dealing with new things and her new powers. I unders…

A Dawn Most Wicked (Something Strange and Deadly, 0.5) by Susan Dennard

Image
A Dawn Most Wicked by Susan Dennard

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was the perfect treat for fans of this series and a go-between each novel. Best of all- it's all about Daniel Sheridan!
This takes place right after Something Strange and Deadly and a trip into the past of Daniel's first love Cass as he works as a engineer’s apprentice. This novelle is action packed with a race to save an old steamer Sadie Queen filled ghosts who have driven off all passengers and how Daniel met the rest of the spirit hunters.
If Daniel didn't steal my heart in book one, he cemented that fact in A Dawn Most Wicked. You get into his head as he deals with alot on his plate but the best gift was being able to see how he ticks.
It was wonderful to see how everyone meet and meeting these characters again. While the ending is bittersweet as Daniel has to say goodbye to Cass, a future with Eleanor is on the horizon and the dawn is filled with all new kinds of hope and discover.

Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard

Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sometimes (or all the time) it hard to describe something you've come across in one word. For me it was easy this time Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard was compelling.
From page one I was quickly drawn into this world which she created with The Dead taking over 1876 Philadelphia and a young woman- Eleanor Fitt ending up stuck in the middle. Eleanor and her family live on the fringe of society after the death of her father. Add to that her brother has gone off into the world without a word in three years and on the day he's to return home, he disappears. His last letter in the hands of one of the dead.

Eleanor hears about Spirit Hunters who maybe able to help find her brother, she feels that she can trust them expect perhaps their inventor, Daniel who makes her crazy and runs the gauntlet of emotions when she's around him. As she and the spirit hunters start to gather more clues, time is …

Endless by Amanda Gray

Endless by Amanda Gray

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was something so beautifully whimsical about Endless by Amanda Gray. I enjoyed the shift between now and the end of innocence that was Romanov Russia.
Jenny Kramer has always had a gift of touch that brings forth the past life of the person she touches. Of late one dream has been haunting her of a young man named "Nikolai" who seems to be calling to her. When she meets and befriends Ben Daulton they come across a music box that triggers shared past lives and a clue to something more. Things only seem to become even more complicated when Nikolai walks into her life...

I'm not one for time travel romances as there's a type of formula to them. Endless gave the reader a different view with dire consequences for time traveling, a Order who upholds the law when someone travels. This wrapped up a quiet world where Endless takes place. It was a great contrast for the past jumps of Russia where there was much un…

The Sum of All Kisses by Julia Quinn

The Sum of All Kisses by Julia Quinn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book triggered an old memory as I read..
When in class we're stuck learning to dance. With a friend as my dance partner, the first steps were awkward, there was some major stumbling and few tumbles. Slowly, the steps started to glide together, the steps go easier and even as we started to master the dance there was still a few trip ups but the joy of dancing on air was something that can't be describe.

The Sum of All Kisses was much like that. There was alot of awkwardness when Lord Hugh Prentice and Lady Sarah Pleinsworth first met where there's still alot of anger and unanswered questions. Sarah still hasn't forgiven Hugh for the heartache he put her family through with the duel and her cousin Daniel being chased from home. Hugh is still dealing the effects of this duel with a ruined leg and his very crazy father.
As peace finally reigns for both families things come to head for these two when …

Unleashing Mr. Darcy by Teri Wilson

Unleashing Mr. Darcy by Teri Wilson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When it comes to re-tellings or takes on Pride and Prejudice I tend to take with a little bit of salt or if it deals with zombies a big heaping. Thankfully, I could control my salt intake with Unleashing Mr. Darcy that was completely adorable. Awesome tension between enemies turn friends turn lovers. All center around dog shows!

Through a series and bumps in the road both Elizabeth and Donovan Darcy find themselves with not so sterling opinion of one another, but find a odd understanding and wanting they try to fight tooth and nail. With each dog show and friends of family throwing these two together of course it just adds to the already building tension.

The only trouble I did have was the tug and pull of dislike, with one second thinking they be working it out then the next them going back to daggers drawn. It was nice how these two work through some their troubles along the way while discovering one another along …

Duke of Midnight (Maiden Lane, #6) by Elizabeth Hoyt

Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm always in the height of anticipation when it comes to Hoyt's newest book. When I found out it was to be Maximus Batten, Duke of Wakefield book, I couldn't wait to see how Hoyt would make him eat his harsh words toward a kind lady's companion and what made him tick.

The thing was he was out shined by IMO the best heroine of the series so far Artemis Greaves. Artemis has had some really crappy hands dealt to her in life and the last blow was her very sane twin brother Apollo thrown into Bedlam for a crime he didn't commit. Artemis is almost at her wit's end in how to get her brother outta there, when the Ghost of St.Giles drops in to save her and her dim-witted cousin and leaves a clue to who he is behind the mask.

Driven by revenge and guilt Maximus haunts St.Giles to track down the murder of his parents as one of the Ghosts of St.Giles. When he saves two women from footpads, he meets his mat…

Scarlett doesn't know who to turn to but she better find out fast whose behind it all before she's next!

For me, Jenn McKinlay is a hit and miss author. While I never got into her Cupcake Bakery series, I've become a big fan of her Library Lover's series. So when I read the write up for her newest series, I was looking forward to this series. Not only I'm a A…

Life for Breezy Jones is going good. An award winning meteorologist following in her father's footsteps. With her cheery outlook she's become very popular in her small town of Aspen Grove.
That all changes when the station is sold and a new general manager, Noah Drake starts making changes that effect everything that is Breezy's dream. To add more fuel to the fire Breezy's more at a lost with a growing attraction between her and Noah and their differences just keeping them apart.

It's always nice to curl up with a cute book and Pride and Precipitation was just a plain cute romance, with shades of Pride and Prejudice and Pollyanna this book had a great cozy town feeling to in along with good solid characters.
Breezy gets hit hard when changes take away her from her dream, getting her replaced diva and makes her a mere weather assistant. Wanting to keep a positive outlook she works hard while trying …

The Governess Club: Bonnie by Ellie Macdonald

The Governess Club: Bonnie by Ellie Macdonald

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In the second of the Governess Club, we meet up with Bonnie whose stuck in between a rock and a hard place. She's the only thing her students who are in her care Henry and Arthur have after the sudden death of their parents.
Something evil is looming over the estate and things seem to come to ahead when the boys guardian finally arrive - Sir Stephen Montgomery. Stephen and Boonie may butt heads but it's up to these two to keep the boys out of danger that seems to be drawing closer.

There was a few conflicting details that didn't take away from the story but the characters themselves didn't feel as fleshed out as in Claire. Sir Stephen while acted like a hero whose been through alot, but never seem to truly thawed and his sudden love for Bonnie seem just to sudden.

Bonnie was a wonderful character who protected her wards and goes through some ringer while keeping her wits about her. I felt it was m…

The Governess Club: Claire by Ellie Macdonald

The Governess Club: Claire by Ellie Macdonald

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The first in the The Goveress Club series, Clarie kicks it off with a sweet romance with a governess Claire Bannister trying to hold on to parts of her past while a romance starts to bloom between her and the mysterious new tutor Jacob Knightly whose a lord in hiding. Between romance, crazy kids, secrets and some nice toast this had a little bit of everything to make it such an enjoyable read.

Being a novella Macdonald did an excellent job building the relationship between Claire and Jacob quickly while the reader notices the change both have in each other lives and outlook. I was very much convinced that they both cared and loved each other with a nice added build up of sexual tension and a great love scene that flowed with the story and didn't hinder it or make it just about lust but about love!

I did feel the ending did lack somewhat of a punch when the truth of who Jacob is came out. The period of separation …
